I am a nephrologist and physician scientist studying acute kidney injury and fasting metabolism in sepsis at UT Southwestern. I was introduced to the low carb diet for personal reasons (husband is a T1D, we saw Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, and both my parents have T2D). I am interested in investigating how this diet changes renal metabolism as well as lipid flux and utilization. My hope is to understand the phenomenon of higher cholesterol and LDL in response to a low carb diet (i.e. Dave Feldman’s Lean Mass Hyper-responder phenotype), as this is one of the major barriers to implementing this dietary intervention in diabetic kidney disease for which current dietary guidelines recommend limiting protein and fat.
